The doctor called today with the results from the baby's ultrasound. All anatomy looked perfect, with one exception. The baby has a cyst on each side of it's brain. They are called choroid plexus cysts, and are seen in only 1-3% of all babies. They are a soft marker for a chromosomal abnormality (trisomy 18).
However, the awesome news is that if there were any chromosomal abnormalities it's very likely they would have seen irregularities in the baby's anatomy...which they didn't! Heart, kidneys, spine, etc. were all perfect.
So what now? They are referring me to the Mayo Clinic for a Level II ultrasound (yet to be scheduled), and I'm just praying they will confirm what they saw yesterday...no additional markers for any abnormality. That will be a very good sign.
We were pretty freaked out at first, but we are educating ourselves and praying a lot. The fact that they saw these cysts ups my risk for a chromosomal abnormality to only a whopping 1%...so we're trying to stay optimistic.
We have realized a few things,
- There is nothing we can do
- No matter what the ultrasound/bloodwork/tests say, the outcome won't change.
- This is all in God's hands. I find comfort in that...He always takes care of us.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this anxiety! We know someone else who went through early concern about trisomy-18, and their second ultrasound was very reassuring- everything turned out fine and he's now a healthy toddler. I hope that everything turns out to be fine.
