Broken or not?

Mason, in typical 3 year old gymnast form, jumped off the couch today...when he landed I heard something crack and he started crying immediately. He said his toe hurt. I looked at his toe, it looked fine - not crooked, no swelling, etc. I asked him to walk, every parent's true test, and he couldn't walk without a severe limp.

Matt also performed an exam, and we couldn't decide if this was something we should take seriously or not. Finally, after 3 hours of refusing to walk on it, we figured it was time to take him in to urgent care. Daddy took Mason in, Mommy stayed home with Charlotte.

They took x-rays and said they couldn't tell for sure if it was broken or not...something about his age, maybe a bad angle on the x-ray. After minimal amounts of research online, I guess there can still be a lot of cartilage in a toddler's foot which can make it difficult to tell if it's broken. Regardless, he got a 'boot' to wear. He can walk with the boot on, but we'll try to keep him off it as much as we can. They said to take the boot off on Friday and if he still has pain when he walks to get him back in to get another x-ray. Tonight, he already asked twice for us to take it off, so I'm not sure how we'll keep it on him for 5 more days!

I'll also be calling his regular doc in the morning to run this by him and see what he says. I'll keep you all posted! Oh, and you bet pictures of Mason in his new 'accessory' are coming soon...poor kid!
