Getting used to my new lens

Yesterday we picked the apples off our tree, it's a big event around our house every year! We got LOTS of apples again this year :)

I used my new lens to get some shots, but I'm having trouble getting used to it. The light was getting a little low outside, so I should have bumped up my ISO, and I know my focus point was off in at least one of them here. So...it's going to take some getting used to. If anyone has any tips I'm more than open to hearing them! (Sarah? Kim?)

It was a fun night, and Isaac was trying to sneak as many apples as he could (refererence the first picture) :)

you know Sonia, I forgot to ask you if you've adjusted your focus dots on your camera when I was talking with you this afternoon. "Focus dots" are not a technical term, but you know the 7 or 8 focal points in your viewfinder? You can set the camera to use only one of those focal points to determine focus, and I've found that's a fantastic way to nail the focus with the nifty fifty. I don't have my manual handy, but I'm sure you could figure out how to change that setting in about 5 minutes ... This is typically called spot metering, but I think it's called something else in the Rebel manual. I use the center focus dot to lock my focus (push shutter button halfway down), then recompose my shot so my subject isn't smack in the middle of the frame. I hope this makes sense!
